Sean Devereux Fund adds its voice to the appeal for help in Haiti
Dear Supporters of The Sean Devereux Childrens Fund,
You will have seen the reports on the news of the terrible destruction and devastation that has resulted from the powerful earthquake in Haiti. A report on the BBC news website said today that Haitian officials estimate that “the death toll in the quake has risen to at least 75,000. Some 250,000 people were injured and about a million left homeless”.
While we have no projects in the country we have received a letter appealing for help for the Salesians of Don Bosco currently operating in Haiti. (The letter is copied below).
Like thousands of others, their homes and schools have been destroyed but they are bravely struggling on despite the fact that 500 of their children are believed to be dead along with three of their own “confreres”(brothers) Our links with The Salesians go back a long way and we wish to add our voice to their call for help.
The projects in Haiti are similar to Salesian projects we support in Africa – that is reaching out to poor children in the community through schools, homes for street children and technical schools teaching vocational skills. We are asking supporters of The Sean Devereux Childrens Fund to consider helping The Salesian Community in Haiti, they are on the spot and have years of understanding and knowledge of the culture.
