A Report on the Lungi Summer Camp – 2009
Report from Brother Philip Gbao:
The summer camp started in the second week in July 2009 after the closing down of schools. We had over three hundred children: and it was a complete success for the entire community.
It was a summer camp, first of its kind, organized by youth leaders and with the help of the Salesian community in Lungi, and The Sean Devereux Foundation. We were able to do a lot for the young people of Lungi. The camp catered for the less privileged children who could not afford the means of attending extra classes during the vacation period from normal schooling.
The summer camp which lasted for two months, provided the children with not only educational values, but also sought to improve on their social, physical, spiritual, and material well being.
Educationally, the students were blessed with qualified teachers teaching in various levels and and from various primary and secondary schools on the community of Lungi. Qualified youth leaders who were there to handle students from classes one to six from junior to secondary school; from form one to senior secondary one. The campers were very excited as they entered their new classes. It was concluded with a week of examination to see how best they were able to understand the various teachings or subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious Education. More subjects were taught from both primary and junior secondary school level. The camper also had activities like bead making and electricity, and computer.
The teaching staffs were well dedicated as they were given some remuneration. And the youth leaders were just volunteers.
For outing we went to the national stadium, the harbour in Freetown , the national museum, Chimpanzee Park at Leicester peak. The children belonged to different denominations.
The camp was climaxed with presentation of gifts like clothes, school materials, shoes and the presentations of trophies to various winners of the group’s games. Food was provided for both students and the youth leaders. The summer camp was indeed a success for the young people here in Lungi, and its environs. My sincere thanks go to the Sean Devreux Foundation in England for providing the fun for the summer camp. The children were happy, and they keep you in their prayers.
Sincere thanks for your financial help because without this the camp would not had been possible.
Yours faithfully in Don Bosco
